Suggestions to Media when dealing with victims of violence/crime:
Victims of crime are afforded specific rights and are standards of service that they can expect to receive as a result of victimization. These standards help ensure that information is received, practical and emotional support are provided, and that they are fully able to participate in the criminal justice system. These standards were created to make sure that victims are treated with dignity and respect at all times, regardless of gender, age, marital status, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability or religion.

It is of utmost importance to CCN that a victim of crime be afforded the respect and confidentiality that they are due, particularly in dealing with any aspect of the media. CCN advocates for the protection and fair treatment of a victim when dealing with the media and recommend that any media entity contacting CCN be familiar with the National Center for Victim of Crime Guidelines for Dealing with the Media; these can be found on-line or by contacting CCN.
